How a shisha is built.
A shisha, also called a water pipe or hookah, consists of just a few parts:
- Head: holds the tobacco. It is traditionally heated with charcoal or electrically.
- Stem: connects the head with the base and leads down into the water.
- Base: the vessel with water through which the smoke is passed.
- Hose and mouthpiece: on the hose port of the stem.
- Purge valve: lets stale smoke escape from the base.

What is the difference between shisha, water pipe and hookah?
They are three names for the same device. “Shisha” is common in German-speaking countries, “hookah” in English, and “Wasserpfeife” (water pipe) is the German generic term.
What is an electric shisha head?
An electric head replaces the classic head with charcoal. It heats the tobacco via heating elements and a battery. More on this in the guide “Electric shisha head”.
How often should a shisha be cleaned?
The water in the base is changed after every use. Stem, hose and head need regular cleaning. Notes on this in the guide “Cleaning a shisha”.
Is there an age limit for shishas?
Under the German Youth Protection Act, tobacco and e-shishas may not be supplied to minors. Many providers also supply shishas and accessories only to adults. This site is intended for persons aged 18 and over.
